The National Organization for Marriage, a Princeton, N.J., group that supports traditional marriage, has launched telephone messages in Hawaii in support of Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou, a Republican, in the special election for Congress.
Djou opposes a civil-unions bill pending before Gov. Linda Lingle. Former congressman Ed Case and state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa, the leading Democrats in the race, endorse the bill.
The National Organization for Marriage spent $7,886 on about 100,000 automated messages, according to federal campaign spending reports. “In a deep blue state, Charles Djou has stood up for the right of Hawaiian voters to define marriage as one man and one woman,” Brian Brown, the group’s executive director, said in a statement. “NOM is working hard to help elect him to Congress on Saturday.”
Meanwhile, One Nation PAC, a conservative group based in Sacramento, Calif., has spent $1,992 on Internet ads for Djou.
